Hermann was born in Brunico, a walled medieval town in Northern Italy. When his parents became teachers in a village school, the family moved further north and Hermann grew up in the steep vallies at the heart of the Italian Alps. Mountain-climbing with his father from an early age gave him a life-long fascination with the beauties and vagrancies of nature.
Working variously in oils, watercolours and pastels, he has exhibited his work across Europe.
While his subjects have included portraits, nude studies, still-life and abstract compositions, his first love has always been the Natural World and he remains best known for his watercolours of mountains, shorelines, countryside and birds.
In 1997, he moved to West Cork in Southern Ireland, attracted by the flexible pace of life, varied landscapes and the transclucent, changeable nature of the light.
He lives in West Cork, with his wife and a demanding retinue of cats, exhibiting his work both locally and in Italy.
